Unicycive Therapeutics Receives U.S. Patent for UNI-494 in Chronic Kidney Disease Treatment

LOS ALTOS, Calif. — August 18, 2025 — Leads & Copy — Unicycive Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: UNCY) announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent 12,377,082 for UNI-494 to treat Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This follows an earlier patent for treating Acute Kidney Injury with UNI-494.

According to Shalabh Gupta, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Unicycive, the company is focused on FDA approval of oxylanthanum carbonate, and this patent supports potential partnerships and future development for UNI-494, which has completed a Phase I study and received Orphan Drug Designation for preventing delayed graft function in kidney transplant patients.

UNI-494 is a novel nicotinamide ester derivative and a selective ATP-sensitive mitochondrial potassium channel activator and may be beneficial for treating kidney disease by restoring mitochondrial function.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as a sudden loss of kidney function and is estimated to occur in 20-200 per million population in the community, 7-18% of patients in the hospital and approximately 50% of patients admitted to the intensive care unit.

Unicycive Therapeutics develops treatments for kidney diseases, including oxylanthanum carbonate for hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease patients on dialysis, and UNI-494 for acute kidney injury-related conditions.
