MicrobiotiX Partners with WAFCIRC for Bacteriophage Therapy Research in Africa

SEOUL, South Korea — November 20, 2025 — Leads & Copy — MicrobiotiX has signed a memorandum of understanding with the West Africa Centre for Innovative Research and Care to collaborate on clinical research of bacteriophage-based therapies. The agreement, announced Nov. 12, 2025, involves working with Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other tertiary hospitals in Ghana.

The collaboration aims to establish a foundation for clinical validation of therapeutics targeting antimicrobial resistance and multidrug-resistant bacteria, expanding treatment options for patients in African regions with limited access to antibiotics.

Under the MoU, the two institutions will conduct studies analyzing AMR and MDR related clinical samples from patients with various infections and assessing the efficacy of bacteriophage therapeutics designed to address these issues. WAFCIRC, in partnership with KATH, a prominent Ghanaian hospital with critical care capabilities, will manage the research, including clinical operations and data management.

MicrobiotiX will provide bacteriophage therapeutic candidates manufactured at its GMP facility and support the collaboration with research funding and technical documentation.

The partnership is anticipated to strengthen infectious disease preparedness in areas vulnerable to antimicrobial resistance, starting in Ghana. MicrobiotiX plans to extend the collaboration across Africa, providing more patients with alternative treatment options.

A MicrobiotiX representative stated that this collaboration marks a first step in addressing antimicrobial resistance in Africa, helping alleviate unmet medical needs in low- and middle-income countries while contributing to global efforts to tackle AMR and MDR.

MicrobiotiX is developing a bacteriophage therapeutic targeting patients with acute Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia as its lead pipeline candidate, which received approval for a Phase 1 human clinical trial from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety on October 21, 2025.
