Corbion and Kuehnle AgroSystems Partner on Natural Astaxanthin Development

August 19, 2025 — Leads & Copy — Corbion, an Amsterdam-based sustainable ingredients leader, and US-based Kuehnle AgroSystems (KAS), a biotech company, have partnered to develop and commercialize high-quality, natural astaxanthin from non-GMO heterotrophic algae. Astaxanthin, an antioxidant and carotenoid pigment, benefits human health and aquaculture.

The companies aim to offer a natural, algae-derived alternative to chemically synthesized astaxanthin and astaxanthin from phototrophic microalgae. The partnership will focus on developing an esterified form of astaxanthin for human and animal nutrition markets.

KAS’s fermentation platform and algae strains will combine with Corbion’s production, regulatory, and market expertise. Development and technical transfer have begun.

Robert Jan de Voogd, General Manager, Algae Ingredients North America at Corbion, said the partnership reinforces their commitment to sustainable solutions. Claude Kaplan, CEO of KAS, added that they are proud to collaborate with Corbion.
