Albemarle County, Virginia — October 9, 2025 — Leads & Copy — AstraZeneca has announced a $4.5 billion investment in a new manufacturing facility in Virginia, an increase of $500 million to support enhanced manufacturing capabilities for a broader range of medicines, including cancer treatments. This investment is part of the historic $50 billion commitment announced in July 2025.
The new facility, located at Rivanna Futures in Albemarle County, is expected to generate approximately 3,600 direct and indirect jobs, driving economic growth and solidifying Virginia’s leadership in life sciences innovation.
The facility is projected to create 600 highly skilled jobs in Virginia, including engineers, scientists, and process facilitators, with an additional 100 jobs resulting from the expansion. A further 3,000 jobs will support the facility’s construction, including engineers, skilled trades, and construction workers. The facility will utilize AI, automation, and data analytics to optimize production.
The new facility will produce drug substance for AstraZeneca’s weight management and metabolic portfolio, including oral GLP-1, baxdrostat, oral PCSK9, and combination small molecule products. The company has expanded the scope to include state-of-the-art manufacturing for its leading antibody drug conjugate (ADC) cancer portfolio. Work will commence immediately, with the facility expected to be operational in the next four to five years. This investment will bring critical medicine manufacturing capabilities to the United States.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator, stated that the investment demonstrates the Trump Administration’s commitment to onshoring drug manufacturing and strengthening supply chains to improve Americans’ access to medication. Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia added that AstraZeneca’s investment is the largest in the company’s history and a game-changer for American drug manufacturing.
Pascal Soriot, Chief Executive Officer of AstraZeneca, said that the investment will drive life sciences innovation and economic growth, creating thousands of jobs and strengthening America’s national security and health sovereignty.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Albemarle County and the General Assembly’s Major Employment and Investment Project Approval Commission to secure the project for Virginia.
