Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN) has announced the commercial availability of the Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks in the Philippines. This system is designed to address Class II skeletal and dental correction by simultaneously advancing the mandible while aligning the teeth.
This marks Align’s first clear aligner product with integrated solid occlusal blocks specifically designed to provide predictable mandibular advancement. The Invisalign occlusal blocks enhance durability, improve engagement, and enable vertical opening, allowing for earlier mandibular advancement in cases of skeletal Class II with deep bite, ultimately improving treatment efficiency.
Class II malocclusion, characterized by a discrepancy in jaw alignment where the lower jaw is positioned too far back relative to the upper jaw, is one of the most common orthodontic problems, affecting approximately 30-45% of malocclusions globally. If left untreated, this condition can lead to functional and aesthetic challenges for patients.
The Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks is intended for growing patients aged 10-16 in the late mixed or early permanent dentition stages. It leverages the natural growth potential during pre-adolescence and adolescence to facilitate effective correction of Class II malocclusions, improve occlusal relationships, enhance facial aesthetics, and provide long-term functional benefits.
The benefits of the system include:
- Efficient Treatment: Reduces the need for multiple appliances and treats Class II malocclusions while aligning teeth simultaneously. The solid occlusal blocks, laser-welded for structural rigidity and durability, minimize crushing and allow for vertical opening, enabling earlier mandibular advancement for Class II deep bite cases.
- Elevated Patient Comfort and Compliance: Made from patented SmartTrack™ material for predictability and comfort. Studies indicate that discomfort from functional appliances can affect patient compliance and outcomes.
- Predictable Tooth Movement: Allows for attachments on teeth under the blocks to facilitate leveling and prevent unwanted movements. The system combines SmartTrack™ material, SmartForce™ features, and SmartStage™ technology for predictable tooth movement.
Sreelakshmi Kolli, Align Technology EVP, chief product and digital officer, noted that the innovation reflects Align’s commitment to expanding the capabilities of the Invisalign System, allowing doctors to treat a wider range of malocclusions with precision and efficiency. She also stated that this helps advance clear aligners as the standard of care in digital orthodontics.
Dr. Mitra Derakhshan, Align Technology EVP and chief clinical officer, stated that the integration of occlusal blocks enhances mandibular engagement and bite opening, providing a versatile solution for different Class II malocclusions. She added that the system offers doctors and patients a better option for Class II correction in growing patients while simultaneously straightening their teeth.
Dr. Ronald Sluiter, an orthodontist practicing in New Zealand, noted that treatment outcomes with the Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks are on par with traditional Clark Twin Blocks and that the enhanced comfort of the Invisalign occlusal blocks increases predictability because comfort leads to patient compliance.
Dr. Steve Semaan, an orthodontist practicing in Australia, stated that the patients instinctively know how to bite, and the system works effectively without any crushing issues, allowing patients to continue treatment without delays or additional appointments.
Dr. Belinda Weltman, practicing in Vancouver, Canada, noted that patients can bite down easily without risk of damaging the blocks, and compliance has been a breeze.
Dr. Francis Janisse, Windsor, Canada, said that the Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks provides ideal block engagement that helps hold the mandible in the proper position for patients that also have mandibular asymmetry. He added that it removes the need for auxiliary elastics and does not require palatal coverage like traditional removable Class ll correctors.
The Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks is commercially available to Invisalign-trained doctors in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Korea, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
The Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks supports the commitment to establishing a unique and differentiated portfolio that supports growing patients throughout their continuum of care, including the Invisalign® Palatal Expander System and Invisalign First™.
